When Ancestry Inspires and Influences Design

Posted by Mark Godsell-Fletcher on

Our fascination with ancestry has grown ever since the popularity of TV programmes such as 'Who do you think you are?' Who we are and where we come from fascinates us, and it is this fascination that has inspired two textile designers. Julia Brendel and Bespoke Binny's designs couldn't be more different, yet their heritage is the foundation of their creations. Julia Brendel At the core of Julia's work is how cultures, beliefs, languages, patterns, flavours and scents coexist and influence modern life. Born to Hungarian/Polish Historians of Art her heritage and passion for folk designs and costumes has been a key influence in her designs. Julia Brendel One of the oldest techniques for embroidery which can be found all over the world is cross-stitch and it is often used for tables cloths and bed linen. Even today the design looks beautifully elegant with a real natural and historic feel. Looking and feeling this beautiful fabric you are transported to a day where life was simple and where gorgeous textiles, such as these were an every day item in our homes. Inspired by 19th Century Hungarian interiors and folk costumes the design is woven to the highest standards. The technique allows the fabric to be reversible, therefore offering two colour solutions within the same fabric. Natalie drew her inspiration from her mother’s native Ghana and took to the sewing machine to create supportive and colourful cushions. Having received interest from other family members and friends, Natalie realised the potential commercial viability of turning a hobby into a business, thus the idea for Bespoke Binny came to fruition. Binny-product-print-5507-2014 Natalie has designed a collection of home furnishings, that are reminiscent of a colourful African marketplace, using a mixture of vibrant wax prints and cotton twills tailoring cushions, kitchen & dining ware and lampshades. Natalie describes her collection of handmade home furnishings as having an 'African twist.'
