How to Brighten Your Home with Light and Colour

Posted by Mark Godsell-Fletcher on

It’s a scientific fact that humans need natural light, and that a lack of it can leave us feeling tired, stressed and blue. Our home is our haven, therefore it stands to reason that the same rule should apply here, too. Of course, not all of us are blessed with floor to ceiling windows, but actually, this doesn’t matter. The trick is to make the most of the light you have, and use clever decorating tips and tricks to create a feeling of lightness. But let us give you some more ideas on how to make your home even more bright, light and beautiful. Identify the dark spaces This sounds a bit sinister, but bear with us. What you need to do is walk through your home with ‘fresh eyes’ and identify those areas or rooms that feel dark. Don’t overthink it, just let your instinct guide you. Then, try and work out why they feel dark. Is it because there’s no natural light? Is it because the furniture is too heavy, or the colour scheme too dark? Are the curtains too bulky? If you are looking for a curtain to lighten your room, try a style similar to these beautiful ochre watercolour bloom eyelet curtains. Perhaps your room has an ‘awkward’ shape, has shadowed corners or has been painted an overly dark colour. A good way to open up the room and infuse it with light is by investing in recessed lighting. Discreet and elegant, they’ll make your room feel twice as spacious and they’re unobtrusive to the eye. If you would like to add colour through a light, then check out this striking blue glass light in our showroom. Mirrors reflect both natural and artificial light to make a room brighter, and bounce light deep into the room, making it appear larger. The trick is in the placement. Use a focal point and angle your mirrors towards it, which will give the illusion of depth. Placing a mirror near a window to reflect the outdoors makes a room look larger, while mirrors on walls create a feeling of flow. Why not see how one of our chunky mirrors can transform a room. Swapping a few pieces around can transform your room, and make it a more enjoyable space to be in. For a lighter wood choice, can we suggest our Limed Grey range. Limed Grey ESL The colour rules The rules are there are no rules, because at the end of the day, your room should always reflect who you are, and your personality. And colour is one of the most instinctive ways to do this. If you adore bright, arctic white, that’s great. But equally, if you love dark, ruby reds or dramatic slate grey, go for it, just work with the room and the light you’ve got. Pick a room that has the most natural light, as this space can ‘take’ darker colours, even if it isn’t particularly big. Consider painting just one or two walls, and leaving the rest white. Using the darker walls as a backdrop for your art or mirrors and leaving the white or neutral walls as they are will also enable you to embrace your favourite colour without compromising on light or space. These wonderfully coloured pieces will brighten any space in your home.  This fluorescent velvet poufee proves that even in the darkest of spaces a splash of colour brings light.
